How to Show Your Pastor Appreciation

How to Show Your Pastor Appreciation

October is Pastor Appreciation Month, which means that it is time to let your pastor know how much they mean to the community. It can be difficult to think of ways you can truly express your gratitude, but anything you do is sure to let them know how much you care. We recommend collaborating with the other church members. This way, it will be easier to come up with ways to celebrate everything your pastor has done for the congregation.

To help you brainstorm, we created a list of meaningful ways that you can recognize their accomplishments. And remember, while October is the month to show your appreciation, you should take care of your pastor no matter the time of the year.

Celebrate Milestones

You and your congregation should celebrate any milestones in your pastor’s career. If their anniversary at the church is coming up, consider throwing them a party to commemorate the occasion. Host a potluck and have all the churchgoers bring a dish that they know your pastor likes.

At the party, consider presenting them with a sentimental gift that shows how you value them. Pastor anniversary gifts should be something special. As such, we recommend giving them something personalized. You can’t go wrong with a crystal plaque that has their name and a bible verse engraved onto the front.

Ask How You Can Help the Church

There is a lot that goes into maintaining a church and ensuring that everything is perfect for a Sunday morning service. A church’s pastor has a lot on their plate, and they are sure to appreciate someone offering to lend a hand. You could offer to take over tasks such as putting together programs or preparing communion. The more church members who pitch in, the more time their pastor will have to put together the perfect sermon.

Arrange a Date Night

Does your pastor have any kids or a pet? Arrange to take care of them while they and their significant other go out on a date night. They may not get to do this very often, so they are sure to appreciate this time spent alone with their loved one. You can make this occasion even more special by giving them a gift card to their favorite restaurant or the local movie theatre. They are sure to have a wonderful, stress-free night that will refresh their minds for next Sunday’s sermon.

Donate to the Church in Their Name

As someone who’s job is to better the lives of those around them, your pastor likely has a host of charities that they love and support. As such, it will likely thrill them to learn that someone donated to one of these organizations in their name. This is especially effective when you donate to a charity that they introduced you to. The gesture will show that you care about the same things they do.

Contribute to the Church’s Library

Many churches have a library stocked with books that members of the congregation can borrow. It is possible that no one has updated the library in recent years, and it can use a bit of variety. Collecting and donating books for the library is a great way to contribute to the church and show your pastor appreciation.

Let Them Know How Their Sermons Affect You

Talk to your pastor about how their sermons impact you. Don’t be afraid to go in-depth. Explain how different sermons have positively affected you and how you are able to apply the messages to your everyday life. Your pastor takes time creating their sermons and the last thing they want is to feel as though their words are landing on empty ears. They want to know that God spoke through them in a way that congregation members can understand and appreciate. Always take time after church to thank them for their teaching and mention one thing in particular that resonated with you.

Give a Thoughtful Gift

We mentioned commemorating special occasions, such as anniversaries, with a gift. However, there are other occasions in which you can present a small token of appreciation to your pastor. For example, you could give them a bible case or a planner. If they will be speaking at an event, you could wish them luck by gifting them with a tie to wear on the occasion. No matter how large or small, the gesture is sure to make an impact.

Go to Church

This one may seem obvious—after all, how else would you know how wonderful your pastor is? However, it is easy at times to let your attendance numbers slip. There are, at times, several extenuating circumstances, such as your family or work deadlines. Additionally, there are times in which we want a morning just to catch up on rest.

While there are certain moments in life that get in the way, do your best to make room for the church in your schedule as often as possible. Though God is your pastor’s ultimate motivator, people in seats largely contribute to his confidence and drive. After all, they want to be sure that members are hearing their messages. Ultimately, the best way to show your pastor that you care is to let them know that you are listening. We believe that thoughtful gestures are important, and we highly recommend that you make them. At the end of the day, however, nothing will show that you care more than your presence at church.
